Issigeac

Issigeac is a 20-minute drive from the gites heading north through Villereal. Wandering through Issigeac almost feels like stepping back in time with intimate and cosy winding streets lined by houses and shops built between the 13th and 16th-century. A few of the more notable architectural highlights here include the ‘Maison des  Tetes’ on the corner of the Grand Rue (be sure to look out for the 600 year old carved wooden heads!) and the Palais des Eveques de Sarlat (Bishop’s Palace) which is found opposite the equally striking gothic St. Felicien Church.

The best way to enjoy Issigeac is simply to stroll the narrow streets taking in the old architecture and then stopping off for a drink - we particularly like the tree-shaded Café de l’Europe tucked away in the corner of Place de l’Église which is great for people-watching with the St. Felicien Church as a backdrop.

The Sunday morning markets are famous and they are considered to be one of the best in the area. The lively market takes over the town so it can be good fun and a chance to try the local produce and see the local arts and crafts scene. Be warned that it can be crowded during the summer months!
