Monpazier

Situated east of Villereal in the Dordogne region, Monpazier is a stunning medieval village and well worth the 15 minute drive from Gites de Bessou. Founded in 1284 by Edward I, Monpazier’s striking medieval centre is almost completely intact which makes it one of the best-preserved Bastide towns and one which has been classified as one of the “most beautiful villages in France”.

The central square is the heart of Monpazier and bordered by a number of inviting shops and cafes with a large market hall at one end. It is also worth exploring grid-pattern streets where you will notice different styles of architecture as well as boutiques, restaurants and cafes.

Our favourite thing to do in Monpazier is to spend time wandering around the central square before heading down to the artisan brewery Biere de la Bastide. This friendly establishment produces a wide range of English-style beers and one for every taste. It has a laid-back atmosphere, interesting decor, helpful staff and plays great music (and occasional live music!).
